An Interview with Mr. Steen Hartsen

Steen Hartsen was interviewed by Nicole Novroski for the Journal of Forensic Genomics in 2026 about his journey into a career in forensic genomics at the BCIT Forensic DNA Laboratory. The interview discussed the laboratory’s recent adoption of SNP technology analysis alongside traditional forensic STR typing, as well as its work in forensic investigative genetic genealogy to help solve cold cases and identify unidentified human remains, primarily in collaboration with the British Columbia Coroners Service. The conversation also explored additional partnerships, including efforts to assist in the identification of children from Canada’s residential schools for repatriation to their families. He also reflected on the future direction of the laboratory and the evolving field of forensic genomics.
