BCIT Forensic DNA Lab
The BCIT Forensic DNA laboratory has validated the Verogen ForenSeq DNA Signature Prep Kit. This kit uses massive parallel sequencing on the MiSeq instrument to extract additional forensically valuable data.
In addition to STR data previously available for forensic analysis, additional STR markers and SNP data increases identification statistics and can provide both phenotypic and biogeographical ancestry information of a DNA contributor. Such information can help investigators identify unidentified human remains or police suspect by the use by helping to narrow down the eye and hair colour of an individual or their ancestral background. Additional data can also help identification of an individual through comparisons of further extended relatives than available before.
