The BCIT Forensic DNA Laboratory is enhancing its forensic toolkit by incorporating Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG). We’ve successfully validated Verogen’s ForenSeq Kintelligence Kit as part of our Massively Parallel Sequencing (MPS) services available to police and coroner investigations.
This advanced kit profiles 10,230 forensic‑grade SNP markers, specifically curated to support kinship analysis while avoiding medically sensitive genetic information. It’s uniquely designed for low-quality or degraded forensic samples, even under challenging conditions
By linking these profiles against distant relatives in genealogy databases, our team can establish familial connections that help identify suspects in violent crimes as well as unidentified human remains, providing powerful support in solving cold cases and bringing closure in missing-person investigations.
